Gloria Jurado is one of ArtConnect’s Artists to Watch '22

Gloria Jurado is an interdisciplinary artist and architect based in Berlin, where currently she is studying the Master Art in Context at UDK (Universität der Künste Berlin).

Her work put in tension the creative and artistic process with a research, supported by a technical, theoretical, and a practical base that has allowed to the artist to develop an interdisciplinary profile.

Through her work, Gloria Jurado tries to address current global issues, with the intention of reflecting on them through art.

Thus, in a context in which Berlin is undergoing a major urban transformation faced by organizations, institutions, and citizens, the artist interprets the constant change of the city and questions its uncertain future through analogue photography, video, sculptures, and installations.

Gloria Jurado's transdisciplinary artistic practice explores and extends the material qualities specific to a medium in order to reflect on the economic, social, and cultural contexts of her works. She introduces a temporal dimension into the medium of photography to document the transience of architectural structures, and links the financial speculation of the real estate market to the art market in her sculptural works. As such, her wider project 'Berlin Umbau' is a vital testimony to the relentless development and transformation of the city.”

ArtConnect asked the winning artists to share with us a glimpse into their creative life to get a sense of their personal inspiration and artistic process.

How did you get started as an artist?

Following the need to develop my creativity and find new means of expression with which to share my sensitivity stimulated by the changing reality that surrounds meet.

How would you describe your artistic approach?

Through my work, I try to address current global issues, with the intention of reflecting on them through art.

My recent practice focuses on the transformation of Berlin, and how factors such as gentrification and speculation are affecting its identity.

Describe a typical day in the studio/wherever you make your work.

Most of my practice time is spent at the construction site, where I try to get inside to record its transformation, either through analog photography or by collecting debris.

Is there a medium, a process, or a technique that you haven't used in your work yet but would like to try out?

I would like to work with debris and building materials and combine them with other materials such as bronze. I'm very interested in experimenting and discovering new mediums, processes, and techniques.

What are you currently working on? Or an upcoming project you want to mention?

I'm currently developing a project called "The value of 1m²". It consists of 1m² sculptures created from the rubble of different sites in Berlin that question the uncertain future of the city. These pieces question the land value of these sites before and after they were bought by investors.

How does it feel to be selected as an ArtConnect Artist to Watch?

I'm very happy and grateful for it, as I consider it a great opportunity to expand my artistic work and thus be able to reach a broader audience.
