Jorge Mario Zumaqué

Jorge Mario Zumaqué is an illustrator living and working in Bogotá DC, Colombia.

Zumaqué describes his work as a bridge that articulates art, science, and conservation in a dialogue between space, color, and form. It is like a game where birds and butterflies merge with surreal and minimalist scenarios to generate a connection between the natural and the creative. His vision of the world can be read from the imagination, creating works that transmit the connection with the whole that surrounds him through illustration, and graphic design.

ArtConnect asked the winning artists to share with us a glimpse into their creative life to get a sense of their personal inspiration and artistic process.

How did you get started as an artist?

When I was 2, my parents cultivated my interest in drawing and painting — and that became my biggest passion.

What are some of the central themes you pursue in your work?

I work on several transversal axes such as biology, illustration, and elements of architecture in order to communicate my expression and the natural environment that surrounds me. I try to show some species of birds, and butterflies that inhabit the Colombian territory so that there is a greater awareness of their existence, especially since I live in a very gray city it is important to give color and life to those who appreciate my work.

Describe a typical day in the studio / wherever you make your work.

I used to drink coffee or one beer listening to some House Music podcasts before starting my creative day... Inspiration comes from music and feelings, I enjoy a lot illustrating the birds or butterflies first by hand, then I turn on my laptop and edit them, composing the final piece digitally by mixing both techniques.

What motivates you to make your art?

Nature and my deep love for it, of course, along with several other things as well, but my biggest motivation or inspiration is nature, without a doubt.

What are you currently working on? / What’s coming up next for you?

I am currently working on a new series that will have my touch of nature, and architecture along with new technics and a new format. The entire month of October, I will have my very first solo exhibition called "Introspectiva" and this will be presented at the French Alliance. The exhibition is supported by the French Embassy in Colombia and the Colombian Ministry of Culture.

Anything else you want to add?

Thanks so much for this opportunity, I am glad to be a part of the Artists of the Month. This motivates me to work harder and to continue communicating through my art with you all.
