Curious to gain more insight into her artistic approach and artistic perspective, we asked a few questions.
How would you describe your artistic style, and what inspires your work?
My artistic practice is a balance between the scientific and the mystical, with a focus on challenging perceptions and evoking a sense of wonder. I am deeply inspired by the vastness of nature and the universe, which mirrors the profound depths of human consciousness.
My work is driven by a desire to capture the ephemeral fragility of our existence. Through the careful manipulation of light, sound, and interactive technology, I create immersive spaces where the boundaries of time blur, and the viewer assumes the role of the gravitational center—an individual star radiating their own narrative.
How has your work evolved over time?
At first, I was captivated by capturing the wonders of the world surrounding me. As time progressed, I felt a pull towards delving deeper into introspection and exploring more profound themes.
This transition prompted me to the study of science and experiment with various technologies, enriching my knowledge and refining my artistic expression. Through these explorations, I've discovered new ways to convey intricate ideas and emotions, making works that resonate more profound emotional responses.
This evolution reflects not only personal growth but also my continuous journey of exploration in the world.
“Ultimately, I hope to spark a sense of curiosity and empathy…”
What message or emotion do you hope to convey through your art?
I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and introspection, inviting viewers to pause and contemplate the beauty and complexity of the world around them. I strive to convey a sense of connection to nature, as well as the emotions and experiences that define the human condition.
Ultimately, I hope to spark a sense of curiosity and empathy, encouraging viewers to engage deeply with their surroundings and with one another.
Can you talk about a piece or series that holds a special significance to you?
Into Orbit (2023) represents the interconnectedness of the cosmos. Through a 6-foot diameter circle adorned with metal music stands, hand-drawn music sheets, and a Midi controller system, I orchestrated a symphony of soundtracks reflecting Earth's journey through time.
As viewers engage with the installation, they're enveloped in a sonic landscape mirroring the evolution of our planet. As the conductor, I guided performers in activating the soundtracks, symbolizing the cyclical nature of existence.
Each element within the piece, from the meteorite nugget to the silver cup, holds symbolic significance, inviting viewers to contemplate their place within the vast expanse of the universe.
What does this work aim to touch on?
This work aims to touch on the interconnectedness of the cosmos and the cyclical nature of existence. Through its multi-sensory experience, it invites viewers to contemplate the journey of Earth through time and space, reflecting on our place within the universe.
What is the process of creating a new work?
My process for creating a new piece of art begins with scientific study, followed by immersive travel experiences to intimately connect with and explore nature firsthand. These experiences serve as the foundation for conceptualizing the artwork.
Next, I study the specific technologies required to bring the concept to life, ensuring a harmonious integration of art and technology.
Finally, I gather materials and assemble the piece, infusing it with the insights gained from my scientific study and personal experiences in nature.
How do you stay motivated and inspired during the artistic process?
I stay motivated and inspired in my artistic practice by constantly seeking new experiences. I take all kinds of classes, including online science courses and various technology classes, to expand my knowledge and skills.
Additionally, I regularly attend artist residencies around the world, immersing myself in diverse cultures and environments to fuel my creativity. These experiences, combined with my exploration of nature and scientific study, keep me engaged and continually inspired in my artistic journey.
